The Blue Finn chair is a highly stackable, multifunctional chair with a plastic seat and back made from at least 85% recycled blue wrap (wrappers for keeping medical instruments sterile).

The below video explains how we use bluewrap from hospitals for new chairs.

The raw material

Bluewrap is entirely made of polypropylene, so-called meltblown and spunbond homopolypropylene. Bluewrap does not look like plastic but rather like a fibrous material. Nevertheless, polypropylene is easy to recycle. But it does require a different recycling process than, for example, the recycling of PET bottles. Bluewrap is used once, discarded and then collected in cooperation with a waste collection company.

Creating value

Every year, thousands of kilos of bluewrap are thrown away. What a waste! That is exactly what hospitals think and it is also what we think! Together with Bywyd and our other chain partners, we have been working on a solution for the recycling of this waste material.

Hospitals LUMC and Meander – together with the Green OR and waste processor PreZero – have been involved in the process from the start. Injection-moulding company Timmerije is making the new parts for the chair.

• Steel parts of frame epoxied; colours according to the “Epoxy and lacquer – Core collection” and “Epoxy and lacquer – Trend collection” colour chart
• Wooden parts lacquered or stained; colours according to the “Stain” colour chart
• Plastic parts: dark blue. Due to the recycled composition of Blue Finn, colour variations may occur per production batch. However, the back and seat of one chair are always the same shade.
