The Vehicles Class builds two each of ten exciting vehicles that demonstrate different mechanisms and power options. The models
are progressively more sophisticated beginning with simple rolling chassis vehicles. These are excellent for running down ramps and
experimenting with different inclines and loads to see how speed and momentum (in terms of how far the vehicle continue to roll) are
effected. The models progress to a wind powered land yacht (try simulating wind with a hand held personal fan), a balloon powered racer
and a rubber band powered car. The first electric powered car is a propeller car where the spinning propeller pushes against the air forcing
the car forwards at speed. There is a simple friction drive car and a pulley driven car where the pupil learns the need to position the motor
with reasonable care for the mechanisms to work properly. The last two cars are gear driven. The first is a high speed racer where a small
pinion gear on the motor drives a larger spur gear fixed to the motor. This car has adjustable steering and a simple ‘differential’ that helps
the car to turn tight corners just like a real car. The last model is an off-road vehicle which uses a ‘worm’ gear to slow the speed of the car
but increase it’s power so it can drive over rough terrain.
The vehicle models provide an ideal opportunity for investigating the force of friction. Friction is a force that occurs between two surfaces
moving against each other. Generally we think of friction as a bad thing within mechanisms. If a simple vehicle is badly constructed so that
the wheels rub against the chassis then the resulting friction will slow the vehicle. Similarly if rotating gears are too tight the mechanism
may well not work at all. On the other hand, some of the models have tyres to increase friction and therefore increase the grip between
the vehicle and the running surface.

Free Standard Delivery is available on Furniture orders over £500 and non Furniture orders over £50. All our deliveries use a signed for service and you only pay one delivery charge per order regardless of the number of items in your order.
